A new study from the University of Texas at Austin has uncovered the potential for Viagra to help people stop drinking alcohol or to increase the chances of quitting drinking.
This is the first study to test the effectiveness of Viagra and other illegal drugs to help individuals stop drinking alcohol.
The findings are based on a large, peer-reviewed, medical review published in theJournal of the American Medical Associationin 2021.
Researchers found Viagra, a drug commonly used to treat erectile dysfunction, was ineffective in helping people quit drinking.
They reported that Viagra was ineffective, however, it increased the risk of fatal heart attack and stroke by up to 15 times and liver damage by up to 30 times.
Dr. Jennifer R. Kuntz, associate professor in the department of medicine and epidemiology at the University of Texas at Austin, said the study showed that people who take Viagra have a higher likelihood of stopping drinking alcohol than non-users.
“It’s definitely a big step forward in using this medication to treat erectile dysfunction,” she said.
A study published last year in the journalJAMA Internal Medicinefound that taking Viagra can increase the risk of death by up to 30 times.
The FDA approved Viagra in 2003 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It has been in the public domain since 1998.
Viagra is not approved for use by anyone under the age of 18.
Kuntz said that the study was sponsored by the drug maker Pfizer, which makes Viagra. The drug has been sold by dozens of manufacturers, including Eli Lilly and Co., Pfizer, and AstraZeneca.
